- This is one of three clarinet concertos that Weber composed for Heinrich Baermann in Munich in 1811.1
- Baermann was a clarinet virtuoso who was employed by the royal court of Munich. On April 5, 1811, at the Court Theater in Munich, Baermann performed the first composition Weber wrote for him, the Clarinet Concertino, Op. 26. The performance was so successful that the court subsequently commissioned Weber to compose two full-length concertos, including Op. 73.2
- Baermann was a strong supporter of Weber’s music. Weber later wrote his Clarinet Quintet for Baermann as well.3
- This concerto was eventually published in Berlin in 1823.4
