- Warlock composed this work for small orchestra in 1917.1
- This is Warlock’s earliest surviving orchestral work.2 He wrote it before he began consistently publishing under the pseudonym of “Peter Warlock” (in August 1918).3
- The theme of this work is a Scottish folk song called “There was anes a May.” The tune is introduced in the oboe after a short introduction.4
