- Die Walküre (“The Valkyrie” WWV 86b) is the “First Day” (Part two of four) in Der Ring des Niebelung. Wagner worked on this opera between 1856-1870;1 he had begun the prose draft of the story in 1851.2
- The work’s first full performance took place on June 26, 1870, at the Königliches Hof- und Nationaltheater in Munich. Wagner had conducted excerpts from the opera (in concert) in Vienna on December 26, 1862.3
- Wagner dedicated this work to his patron King Ludwig II of Bavaria.4
