- Villa-Lobos wrote five Preludes for guitar in 1940.
- Prelude No. 1 in e minor, “Andantino expressivo”
- Prelude No. 2 in E Major, “Andantino”
- Prelude No. 3 in a minor, “Andante”
- Prelude No. 4 in e minor, “Lento”
- Prelude No. 5 in D Major, “Poco animato”
- The work premiered as a whole in Montevideo in 1942 performed by guitarist Abel Carlevaro.
- Originally, the work contained six preludes; however, the sixth was lost before publication in 1954.1
- The collection of preludes represents the composer’s final work for solo guitar. The piece is considered a “collection” rather than a cycle because it comprises five independent pieces grouped together, each with its own distinct character.2
