- Baltā ainava (White Scenery) is one of four piano pieces evoking a seasonal landscape. Vasks didn’t intend to write a cycle of seasonal works when he wrote the first of the group, Baltā ainava, in 1980.

- Vasks wrote the following about Baltā ainava:
- “In Baltā ainava everything is white. A new year begins. It is a quiet meditation, a new beginning, with only two themes.”
- As a composer, Vasks has noted that, “I am deeply rooted in nature, in the nature of the North. It influences all of my music.”1
