“Julius Caesar” Overture

  • Inspired by the Shakespeare play, Tobias’s “Julius Caesar” Overture is considered to be the first symphonic work with a distinctly Estonian identity. The overture helped lay the groundwork for the development of an Estonian classical music tradition.
  • Tobias wrote “Julius Caesar” in 1896 while a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory where he studied composition under Rimsky-Korsakov.1
