  • Hamlet is a grand opéra in 5 acts (a genre of large-scale French opera that was popular during the second half of the 19th century and known for its elaborate staging and scenery).
  • The opera premiered in 1868 at the Paris Opéra. Michel Carré and Jules Barbier wrote the libretto based on the French adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet by Alexandre Dumas père.1
  • The baritone aria, “J’ai pu frapper le misérable” is the famous monologue, “To be or not to be,” sung by Hamlet in Act 3 of the opera.
