- Tchaikovsky composed this symphony in 1888. It premiered on November 17, 1888, in St. Petersburg, in a performance by the St. Petersburgh Philharmonic Society. Tchaikovsky conducted the premiere.1
- Tchaikovsky dedicated this symphony to Theodor Avé-Lallement, the director of the Hamburg Philharmonic Society.2
- Tchaikovsky’s first sketches for this symphony include a tentative program, which can be read here. It is unclear how much of this initial concept is reflected in Tchaikovsky’s final version of the symphony.3
