Nocturne for Cello in D Major, Op. 19, No. 4

Composer: TCHAIKOVSKY, Peter Ilyich
  • Tchaikovsky’s 6 Morceaux, Op. 19, is a set of character pieces for piano which he completed in 1873. In February of 1888, the composer arranged the fourth selection (“Nocturne”) for cello and orchestra.1
  • The cello version of Op. 19, No. 4 premiered in Paris on March 4, 1888. The cello soloist was Anatoly Brandukov and Tchaikovsky was the conductor.2 The orchestra was the Colonne Orchestra, an ensemble founded in 1873 by conductor Édouard Colonne. Their series, the Concerts Colonne, set a special emphasis on new music.3
  • Each selection in Tchaikovsky’s Op. 19 has a different dedicatee. This Nocturne is dedicated to Monika Terminskaya, a pianist who had studied at the Moscow Conservatory,4 where Tchaikovsky was on the faculty.5
