- Suppé’s 1864 operetta, Pique Dame (The Queen of Spades), was actually a revised version of the composer’s 1862 one-act operetta, Die Kartenschlägerin (The Fortune Teller).
- The operetta’s plot is loosely based on Alexander Pushkin’s novella.
- Like many of his operatic works, the stage production is seldom performed today, but the overture from the work endures.1
