Tale of a Winter’s Evening, Op. 9

Composer: SUK, Josef
  • Suk’s Pohádka zimního večera (“Tale of a Winter’s Evening;” also translated into English as “A Winter’s Tale”) is a programmatic overture based on the play by Shakespeare.
    • Fun fact: Suk famously avoided drawing inspiration from literary sources. Tale of a Winter’s Evening is one of the composer’s rare exceptions.
  • The piece was written in 1894 and revised in 1926.1
  • Written early in his career, Tale of a Winter’s Evening shows the influence of Suk’s mentor (and soon-to-be father-in-law), Dvořák, while also portraying a confident emerging musical voice.
