- Written in 1848 and performed on August 31, 1848, at a celebration concert for Radetzky’s victory at the Battle of Custoza.
- Joseph Radetzky von Radetz was an Austrian field marshal. One of his greatest military victories was at the Battle of Custoza during the First Italian War of Independence.1
- Given the celebratory tone of the piece and its origins of national pride, the Radetzky March is performed often in Austria, particularly at New Year’s Day concerts and sports events.
