- Strauss’s Violin Concerto in d minor was written between 1880-82, when the composer was a teenager (~16-18 years old).
- Three movements:
- Allegro
- Lento, ma non troppo
- Rondo. Presto
- Strauss dedicated the concerto to violinist Benno Walter, who also premiered the work. Walter was Richard Strauss’s childhood violin teacher (though the piano was Strauss’s primary instrument).1
- Strauss’s writing in this early piece is firmly rooted in the Romantic era, unlike his more mature works.
- Fun fact – Violin Concerto in d minor is the only violin concerto Strauss wrote.
