  • Indigo and the Forty Thieves (Indigo und die vierzig Räuber) is a 3-act operetta by Johann Strauss II, written1871.
  • The plot, with libretto written by Maximilian Steiner, is based on “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves” from One Thousand and One Nights.
  • Indigo and the Forty Thieves was Strauss’s first operetta (he would go on to write ~20). It premiered in 1871 at the Theatre an der Wien.1
