- Somervell wrote his Violin Concerto in g minor in 1930 for Hungarian violinist Adila Fachiri. Fachiri was the grandniece of renowned violinist Joseph Joachim and sister of Jelly d’Aranyi.
- The piece premiered in Edinburgh in 1932, and while it was considered a success, the concerto was soon largely forgotten and consequently left out of standard concert repertoire for decades.
- Violin Concerto in g minor was the composer’s last major orchestral work.1
