“Hutsul Triptych for symphony orchestra. Composed in 1965, this three movement work is based on themes from the composer’s own soundtrack to Sergei Paradzhanov’s 1964 film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. The film, in turn, is an adaptation of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky’s novel by the same title, written in 1911. Each of the three movements depicts key scenes in the lives of Ivan and Marichka – the two main characters in Kotsiubynsky’s novel.”
