- This symphony premiered in Helsinki on February 19, 1923. The composer conducted the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.1
- Sibelius described this symphony as “pure spring water,” because he felt that younger composers’ symphonies were more like less healthful “cocktails.”2
- Some scholars have noted the influence of Palestrina and Monteverdi in this symphony, both composers that Sibelius was studying around the same time.3 The symphony’s historical leanings can also be seen in its copious use of the Dorian mode.4
