Karelia Suite, Op. 11

  • Written in 1893, Sibelius’ Karelia Suite consists of three movements:
    1. Intermezzo
    2. Ballade
    3. Alla marcia1
  • Both the Karelia Suite and the Karelia Overture, Op. 10, comprise incidental music called “Karelia Music,” originally written for a theatrical presentation by the Viborg Student Association of the University of Helsinki.
    • The original incidental music contained an overture, 8 tableaux, and 2 intermezzi.
    • After his marriage to Aino Järnefelt in 1892, Sibelius made a pilgrimage to Karelia, where he drew inspiration from many regional folk tunes.2
  • Karelianism is a 19th-century Finnish cultural movement focused on preserving and celebrating Finland’s Karelian heritage.3
