- Schumann finished the first version of this symphony in 1841, and offered it to publishers as his second symphony. It was rejected, so he revised it and eventually released it in 1851 as his fourth symphony.1
- The symphony’s first version premiered in Leipzig on December 6, 1841.2 Ferdinand David conducted the Gewandhaus Orchestra in this performance.3 The second version, the one known as Schumann’s Symphony No. 4, premiered in Düsseldorf on December 30, 1852.4 Schumann conducted that performance.5
- Schumann dedicated the first version of this symphony to Clara Wieck Schumann (he completed the first version the year after their marriage). He dedicated the final version of 1851 to Joseph Joachim.6
