- Published in 1854, Albumblätter (Album Leaves) is a collection of “discarded” piano pieces that Schumann had written earlier in his career.1
- The period from which these pieces date covers quite a bit of Schumann’s career, starting as early as ~ 1833 and ending as late as ~ 1845.
- Following the success of his Album for the Young, Op. 68, Schumann saw a promising financial opportunity to publish more collections of works for solo piano.2
- The collection’s title, “Album Leaf,” refers to a 19th-century term for a short, lyrical piece of music. In these intimate works, a composer tries to capture a specific mood or emotion.3
