- Schumann composed this chamber piece in February of 1849. It was originally scored for horn and piano, but it was published with the option of using violin or cello as the solo instrument instead.
- Schumann was having something of a chamber music month: he also composed his Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano, op.73, in February of 1849.
- Schumann originally entitled this piece “Romanze und Allegro.”
- Schumann revisited horn writing a couple months later, writing his Konzertstück for Four Horns and Orchestra, Op. 86 in March of 1849.1
