L’Italiana in Algeri

Composer: ROSSINI, Gioachino
  • Rossini L’italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) for the Teatro S. Benedetto, where it premiered on May 22, 1813.1
  • Rossini’s Grove’s article calls this “the zaniest of all buffo operas”2
  • Rossini composed this opera in 27 days (yikes) because the Teatro S. Benedetto needed a new show to recoup after a failed performance, and the first composer from whom they had ordered an opera never delivered his.3
  • Synopsis from the Metropolitan Opera
