Horn Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 178

Composer: RHEINBERGER, Joseph

Quick Facts

  • Three-movement piece for horn and piano
    1. Con moto
    2. Quasi adagio
    3. Con fuoco
  • Composed and published in 18941

About the Piece

  • The first and third movements are lighthearted and full of playful dynamic contrasts, offset by the middle movement’s Romantic lyricism.
  • At this point in history, the best-known piece for this instrumental pairing had been a sonata by Beethoven written nearly 100 years earlier. Rheinberger was filling a void with his Op. 178 in that sense.
