Quick Facts
- Three-movement piece for horn and piano
- Con moto
- Quasi adagio
- Con fuoco
- Composed and published in 18941
About the Piece
- The first and third movements are lighthearted and full of playful dynamic contrasts, offset by the middle movement’s Romantic lyricism.
- At this point in history, the best-known piece for this instrumental pairing had been a sonata by Beethoven written nearly 100 years earlier. Rheinberger was filling a void with his Op. 178 in that sense.
