Ouverture carnevalesca (“Carnival Overture”)

Composer: RESPIGHI, Ottorino
  • Respighi wrote Ouverture carnevalesca (“Carnival Overture”) in 1913, scoring the piece for large orchestra, including tuba, drums, and glockenspiel. The overture premiered in Bologna that same year under the composer’s baton.
  • Ouverture carnevalesca uses a saltarello dance form, like many of Respighi’s early orchestral works; however, the second theme sounds more Russian in character, perhaps a lasting impression made from Respighi’s time spent studying composition with Rimsky-Korsakov.1
