String Quartet in F Major

Composer: RAVEL, Maurice
  • Ravel wrote String Quartet in F Major between 1902-03. The piece consists of four movements and is dedicated to “my dear master (teacher) Gabriel Fauré.” Fauré had taught Ravel at the Paris Conservatoire.1
    • String Quartet in F Major was Ravel’s first and only string quartet.
  • Ravel was likely inspired by Debussy’s String Quartet in g minor when writing this work, both in terms of structure and style. Debussy, in turn, was enthusiastic and supportive at the premiere of Ravel’s quartet, advising the young composer to change nothing, while other composers offered criticism.
    • String Quartet in F Major marked Ravel’s first major success as a composer.2
