- Raff’s Symphony No. 11 in a minor is the fourth in a series of seasonal symphonies.
- Symphony No. 8 is subtitled “Spring Sounds”
- Symphony No. 9 is subtitled “In Summer”
- Symphony No. 10 is subtitled “To Autumn”
- Interestingly, Raff composed Symphony No. 11 in 1876, before the remaining seasons, but chose to set it aside for publishing until he finished the other three.
- Symphony No. 11 contains four movements:
- I. “Der erste Schnee” (The First Snow): Allegro
- II. Allegretto –> The reason behind this movement’s lack of title is unknown. It could have been a choice by the composer, or it could indicate that the work was not actually finished before Raff died.
- III. “Am Kamin” (At the Hearth): Larghetto
- IV. “Karneval” (Carnival): Allegro1
- For all his symphonies, Raff wrote programmatic music with descriptive subtitles.
