Symphony No. 2 in e minor, Op. 27

Composer: RACHMANINOV, Sergei
  • Rachmaninoff did most of his work on this symphony during restful periods between tours at his home in Dresden in 1906 and 1907.1
  • The composer conducted the Russian Symphony Society Orchestra in the work’s premiere on February 28, 1908 in St. Petersburg.2
  • Rachmaninoff dedicated this symphony to Sergei Taneyev, who had been his counterpoint professor at the Moscow Conservatory.3
    • Rachmaninoff admired Taneyev very much. He called Taneyev, “The personification of truth on earth” and “the most cultured musician of our time.”4
