- Madama Butterfly premiered on February 17, 1904 at La Scala in Milan.1
- The opera was based on a play of the same name by David Belasco, which Puccini saw in London in 1900. Puccini promptly sought the rights to make an opera of the play and was granted them in September of 1901.2
- Puccini’s Fanciulla del West (1910) was also based on a play by Belasco (The Girl of the Golden West).3
- Belsaco’s Madama Butterfly was in turn based on a story by J.L. Long which was originally published in a magazine in the 1890s Long’s story was itself based on a novel by Pierre Lotti called Madame Chrysanthème.4
