- When Ponce composed this work, he had recently returned from studying in Germany and had joined the piano faculty of the Conservatorio Nacional in Mexico City.
- When Ponce composed this piece, classical compositions influenced by Mexican folk music were rare. Four years later, in 1913, Ponce would give his seminal musicological lecture “La musica y la canción mexicana,” which more or less single-handedly launched the Mexican national school of composition.1
