- Ponce composed this sonata in 1927, and it was published in 1928.1
- Ponce generally referred to this sonata as “Sonata III.” It was not chronologically his third sonata for guitar, though it was his third without a programmatic or descriptive title.2
- Segovia was the work’s dedicatee, and he edited the first edition.3 He wrote to Ponce from Switzerland while in the process of editing Sonata III:
“I am in the full revision of your works. Sonata III is ready … It is all very beautiful and it is a work of importance for the guitar, the player and the public. I thank you once more wholeheartedly.”
