- Written in the summer of 1788 in Vienna; the first of Mozart’s “last three symphonies” (alongside Nos. 40 and 41, also written that same summer)
- Four movements:
- Adagio; Allegro
- Andante con moto
- Menuetto e Trio
- Allegro1
- Fun fact – Symphony No. 39 is the only one of Mozart’s “adult” symphonies to omit oboes, giving heavier prominence to the clarinets.
- Second fun fact – the slow introduction to the first movement was a feature rarely heard in Mozart’s symphonies.2
