Symphony in G Major, “Neue Lambacher”

Composer: MOZART, Leopold
  • Symphony in G Major was probably composed around 1767 and represented the composer at his most mature.
    • This dating proves that while Leopold Mozart significantly decreased his rate of composition after focusing on the careers of his children, he didn’t stop altogether. Rather, he continued to foster contemporary techniques and styles for his own purposes in addition to those of his children.
  • Fun fact – the “Neue Lambacher” symphony was one of several works by Leopold Mozart incorrectly labeled as an early work of his son, Wolfgang Amadeus, due to their “modern” sound.
    • Confusingly, Wolfgang also wrote a Symphony in G Major called “Alte Lambacher” around the same time as Leopold’s “Neue Lambacher.”1
  • The “Lambach” refers to Lambach Abbey in Austria, where the Mozart family likely stayed while journeying between Vienna and Salzburg.
