Four Puerto Rican Dances

Composer: MOREL CAMPOS, Juan
  • This track is a collection of four danzas for piano four-hands by Juan Morel Campos. While not inaccurate to refer to them as “dances,” they are specifically danzas, a Puerto Rican genre of social dance influenced by the Spanish contredanse and its Cuban form, the habanera.1
    • In their program notes for this recording, the XX Digitus Piano Duo explains that a danza is structured with an introduction, followed by three distinct themes.
    • These danzas are not a cycle collected by Morel Campos, but rather a selection of four of his many danzas presented as a collection in XX Digitus Duo’s 4+1 album. The selections come from a 1958 Puerto Rican publication of Morel Campos’s danzas for piano in five volumes.
