- Mendelssohn completed this concerto on September 16, 1844. It was his last major orchestral work. Mendelssohn died in 1846.1
- Mendelssohn wrote this concerto for his friend and colleague, violinist and composer Ferdinand David. David was the concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and Mendelssohn was the Gewandhaus conductor.2
- Ferdinand David played the premiere of this concerto on March 13, 1845, in Leipzig, with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Niels Gade was the conductor.5
