Symphony No. 1 in c minor, Op. 11

Composer: MENDELSSOHN, Felix
  • Mendelssohn composed his Symphony no.1 in 1824, when he was 15. The symphony premiered in Berlin the same year.
  • Mendelssohn conducted this symphony in his public English concert debut on May 25, 1829 (He was 20, and he had performed at private occasions in England before this.)
  • According to biographer R. Larry Todd, Mendelssohn’s Symphony no. 1 is one of his first compositions to display contemporary influences (like the music of Beethoven) in addition to the historical models (like Bach) favored by his composition teacher C.F. Zelter.1
