- Mendelssohn composed his 12 string sinfonias between 1821-1823 (aged 12-14).
- Mendelssohn’s string sinfonias are highly contrapuntal, influenced by the music of J.S. Bach. The Mendelssohn siblings’ composition teacher, Friedrich Zelter, was a Bach scholar emphasized Bach as a model to his students.
- Mendelssohn’s string symphonies also show the influence of C.P.E. Bach, one of the first classical symphonists, who also composed string sinfonias.1
