  • Suite No. 1 in a minor is a five-movement work for orchestra written between 1888-91. All five movements reflect on outdoor settings and the seasons, a portrait of the composer’s lifelong love of nature.
  • Movement titles (MacDowell originally published the titles in German, despite being written in the U.S.):
    1. In a Haunted Forest
    2. Summer Idyll
    3. In October
    4. The Shepherdess’ Song
    5. Forest Spirits1
  • The first publication of Suite No. 1 in a minor did not include the third movement, “In October.” MacDowell inserted that movement in 1893.2
