- MacDowell composed his first Piano Concerto while he was living in Germany after studying at several German conservatories. He dedicated the concerto to Franz Liszt, for who he had played as a conservatory student.
- In 1896, the Boston SO performed this concerto, along with MacDowell’s “Indian” Suite, at the Metropolitan Opera House. The performance was so successful that it helped lead to MacDowell’s appointment as Columbia University’s first (at that time, only) music professor.
- MacDowell’s Grove article identifies Grieg’s Piano Concerto in a minor and Schumann’s Piano Concerto in a minor as models for MacDowell’s Piano Concerto no. 1.1
