- Ma composed Neimeng zuqu (Inner Mongolia Suite), Op.9, in 1937. The work is scored for violin and piano.1
- Ma was a violin virtuoso and often composed for the instrument.2
- This suite is also known by the title of Suiyuan Suite. From 1928-1949, Inner Mongolia was held a province by the People’s Republic of China and renamed Suiyuan.
Movements
- Epic. This movement includes a theme from a folk song entitled “Kangding Love Song.”
- Nostalgia.This movement is also based on a folk tune.
- Dances beyond the Frontier. This movement quotes an inner Mongolian folk song, “Jiao Daniang.”3
