- Written in 1907, Lyapunov’s Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes is a single-movement work for piano and orchestra. The first performance took place in 1909 with the composer as the solo pianist, along with the Free Music School Orchestra conducted by A A Bemardi.1
- Lyapunov dedicated the work to pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni.2
- Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes strongly indicates the influence of Liszt, particularly in the virtuosic piano writing.3
- While studying at the Moscow Conservatory, Lyapunov’s piano professor had been Karl Klindworth, a pupil of Liszt.4
