- Locatelli’s L’arte del violino (The Art of the Violin), deemed by many to be his most famous work, is a collection of 12 concertos for solo violin, strings, and continuo, published in 1733 as Op. 3.
- L’arte del violino is known for the added “capriccios” for unaccompanied violin inserted into the first and last movements of each concerto. The capriccios act as a sort of cadenza, or moment of flash to show off the musician’s virtuosity!
- Each of the 12 concertos comprises the traditional three movements in a fast-slow-fast structure.1
