- Pietro Antonio Locatelli [pee-EH-tro ahn-TOH-nee-oh loh-kuh-TEL-lee] was an Italian virtuoso violinist and composer. At the age of 16, he traveled to Rome to study violin formally. In subsequent years, he toured around (modern-day) Italy and Germany.
- In 1729, Locatelli settled in Amsterdam, where he retired from public performance and instead devoted himself to teaching and conducting an ensemble of amateur musicians. During this time, he also published his compositions.1
- Locatelli was known for being an ardent student of the arts. He acquired an extensive art collection and housed a substantial library of books on history, philosophy, and science.2
