The Prince and the Pauper Suite

Composer: KORNGOLD, Erich Wolfgang
  • Korngold wrote the film score for the 1937 film adaptation of Mark Twain’s 1881 novel. Like many of Korngold’s film scores, the music from The Prince and the Pauper was quickly arranged as an orchestral suite for the concert hall.
  • The story told through Korngold’s music takes place in Tudor England. A young prince and a poor boy discover that they look nearly identical to each other. They switch places, which unsurprisingly leads to challenges, but they ultimately discover that a person’s character is not based on title or social position but rather from within.
  • Fun fact – the main theme from The Prince and the Pauper was later recycled for the last movement of Korngold’s Violin Concerto (1945).
