*Pronunciation note – “ee-VAHN KNOR” (yes, pronounce the “k”)
- Despite being a composer in his own right, Knorr is best remembered today as the teacher of the “Frankfurt Group,” a group of English-speaking students studying at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt.
- These students included Henry Balfour Gardiner, Percy Grainger, Norman O’Neill, Roger Quilter, and Cyril Scott.1
- Fun fact – Brahms thought very highly of Knorr as a composer and was responsible for recommending him for the teaching position at the Hoch Conservatory, which was under the direction of Clara Schumann at the time.2
