Soliloquy for flute and string quartet

Composer: HIGDON, Jennifer

The word “soliloquy” means to give a speech. This work is a thoughtful, plaintive speech by the [flute], assisted by the strings. It is a purely musical thought.”

  • Fun fact – Soliloquy was originally the middle movement of an oboe concerto in which the soloist had to switch to English horn. Since that time, several musicians have asked Higdon to arrange the movement as a standalone work for their instruments.2
  • The composer has arranged eight different orchestrations for this piece. This version features flute and string quartet. Other versions include English horn and flute quartet, clarinet and string orchestra, and cello and string orchestra.
