- Haydn composed this concerto in 1796. This was late in his career, at a time when his duties for the Esterhazy family had been greatly reduced. Additionally, at this time, the family spent more timein Vienna than in their country estate in Esterháza. Both the reduced workload and the time in Vienna brought Haydn artistic freedom to write music for more occasions and patrons than before.1
- Haydn wrote this concerto for trumpeter Anton Weidinger, a musician at the Viennese court who had invented a keyed trumpet. Weidinger’s instrument was an ancestor of our modern valved trumpet.2
- Weidinger played the premiere of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat on March 28, 1800.3 The performance took place at the Old Burgtheater in Vienna.4
