- Haydn composed this symphony in 1773.
- Portions of this symphony may have originally served as an overture to a Vorspiel entitled Der Götterrat (“The Gods’ Counsel,” 1773), a one-act theatrical piece which was performed as an opener for Haydn’s marionette opera Philemon und Baucis, oder Jupiters Reise auf die Erde (Philemon and Baucis, or, Jupiter’s Journey on Earth).
- Philemon and Baucis was performed at Eszterháza in 1773 during a state visit from Empress Maria Theresa.1
