Serenade from Quartet Op. 3, No. 5

Composer: HAYDN, Joseph
  • This piece is probably spurious. The Opus 3 set of quartets was published under Haydn’s name by Paris publisher Bailleux in 1777, but Haydn scholars have long argued about the set’s authenticity.1
  • In 1964, scholars located 17th-C. copies of the original publication’s plates where the composition was attributed not to Haydn but to Benedictine monk Father Roman Hofstetter2 (1742-1815). Hofstetter composed a considerable amount of instrumental music and was a serious Haydn fan.3
