- Hanson composed his first symphony in Rome in 1922, where he was studying with Ottorino Respighi. Hanson had been awarded the first American Rome Prize in 1921, allowing him to live and study for two years in Rome.
- Hanson’s “Nordic” Symphony was named in honor of his Swedish heritage and to recognize the influence of Jean Sibelius, a composer Hanson particularly admired.
