- Grieg composed Fra Holbergs tid (“From Holberg’s Time”), Op.40, in 1884 for festivities surrounding the bicentenary of Norwegian writer Ludvig Holberg, Baron Holberg (1684-1754).
- Grieg composed the suite in a Neo-Baroque style, harking back to the music of Holberg’s period. The titles and structure of the movements (Praeludium, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air and Rigaudon) reflect a Baroque dance suite.
- Grieg originally composed this work for piano (not unlike the scoring of historical Baroque dance suites for harpsichord), and later made a string orchestra version.1
